Message from the Head of College

Dear College Community,

As we gather together, I want to take a moment to reflect on the blessings that surround us each day. When we come to church on Sunday, we engage with the readings during the liturgy, which are thoughtfully arranged to resonate with the various occasions and seasons we experience throughout the year. The church is dedicated to reminding us of God’s abundant blessings — blessings reflected in the changing of seasons, the gift of nature, and the love we share within our community.

In Egypt, we celebrate the annual Nile flood, a remarkable phenomenon that has nourished the land for centuries. Every year, during July and August, the waters from the Ethiopian mountains surge forth, blessing the countries along the Nile with life-sustaining resources essential for agriculture and survival. This annual event is a reminder of God’s providence, showing us that He never forgets His people.

Similarly, here in Australia, we experience our own seasons. Whether it’s the heavy rains that nourish our land, the warmth of summer, or the chill of winter, each season brings its own blessings. We are fortunate to live in a land abundant with fruits, vegetables, and grains, much more than we need, allowing us to share with others and support those in need.

I encourage you all to recognise the blessings in your own lives. When you wake each morning, take a moment to thank the Lord for the day ahead, and at night, reflect on the gifts you have received. Appreciate the love of your family, the friendships you cherish, and the opportunities for learning and growth at school. These are all blessings that God has bestowed upon you.

As we navigate our daily lives, let us remember to be grateful and to use our blessings wisely. We are called to act with kindness and compassion, sharing our abundance with those who may be less fortunate. Your actions can create a joyful and welcoming environment for everyone in our community.

Always remember that you are cherished as sons and daughters of God. He loves you and cares for you deeply. In times of challenge, you will find warmth and support from those around you, reminding you of the love that exists within our community.

As we embark on this new week, let us carry the spirit of gratitude in our hearts. Acknowledge the blessings that fill your life, and strive to be a source of light and joy for others. Together, we can create a loving and supportive community that reflects God’s love and grace.

Message from the Principal

Greetings College Community,

As we find ourselves nearing the end of Term 3, I am delighted to reflect on the many rich experiences and achievements that have shaped life at our college throughout July and August.

In late July, we were blessed by a visit from His Grace Bishop Rewis, General Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Melbourne. This was a treasured moment for our college community.

Our senior students have been extending their learning beyond the classroom. Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies students gained first-hand insights into courtroom processes during an excursion to the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court. Meanwhile, Year 10 students immersed themselves in the Work Experience Program, exploring industries connected to their interests and aspirations.

The VCE Information Night gave parents, carers, and students in Years 10 and 11 the opportunity to consider subject selections and career pathways. We also hosted a student leadership workshop, further empowering our emerging leaders.

To lift spirits and strengthen bonds, our Year 12 students enjoyed a lively team-building excursion to Archery Attack. Congratulations are also due to Green House, crowned term two champions.

The SMCO debating season wrapped up with commendable performances in the fifth round of the Essendon competition. At the Victorian School Music Festival, our Upper Primary Choir received a bronze award, while the Middle School Choir earned a silver award. We also welcomed several visiting authors, inspiring a love of reading and creativity in our students.

Science Week filled our classrooms with curiosity and discovery, and Primary and Secondary Excellence Awards were presented to celebrate outstanding effort and achievement. Our interschool sports teams also demonstrated not only strong performances but the sportsmanship and college spirit that defines SMCO.

Finally, highlights such as Year 11 camp, the celebration of St Mary’s Feast, and being featured in The Age for both academic and community growth and so much more, remind us that our college continues to thrive in faith, learning, and service.

As we continue our journey together, may we hold fast to the words of Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” I thank our dedicated staff, students, and families for their commitment and support, and I look forward to the months ahead as we move together towards the close of another successful term.

Blessings,

A Day of Faith, Community & Celebration: His Grace Bishop Rewis Visit

We were honoured to welcome His Grace Bishop Rewis, Bishop of Melbourne, to our college for a truly special community event. From a heartfelt assembly with students, staff, and families to meaningful moments shared over morning tea and lunch with College leadership and clergy, this visit was a celebration of unity, tradition, and spiritual connection.

During his visit, His Grace addressed all the students, encouraging them to nurture not only their bodies and minds, but also their spirits with the love of God. He spoke about the important role the future generation will play in building and strengthening the Church in the years to come.

Following his talk, His Grace toured the school, visiting many classrooms and warmly interacting with students. His kindness, care, and genuine interest in their learning and well-being left a lasting impression on the school community. Watch the highlights from this memorable day below.

Get to know the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung People

The Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung, including the Gunung-Willam-Balluk clan, are the Traditional Custodians of the land on which the City of Hume was established. Their connection to Country stretches back thousands of years and continues to this day.

Our College respectfully acknowledges the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung People, including the Gunung-Willam-Balluk clan, as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which the College stands. The school recognises the rich Aboriginal heritage within the City of Hume and embraces the living cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as a vital part of Australia’s identity.

The College pays respect to the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung community, honouring Elders past, present and future, and celebrating the resilience and contributions of their families who remain connected to this land today.

“The Wurundjeri People take their name from the Woiwurrung language word wurun, meaning the Manna Gum (Eucalyptus viminalis), a tree common along Birrarung (Yarra River). The word djeri refers to the grub found in or near the tree. Together, Wurundjeri means the ‘Witchetty Grub People.’ Our Ancestors have lived on this land for millennia.”

VCE Legal Excursion: Order in the Court!

In late July, the Year 11 and 12 VCE Legal Studies students attended an excursion to the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court to deepen their understanding of criminal law and courtroom procedures.

Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to sit in on real-life criminal hearings, including committal mentions, bail and custody hearings, and minor criminal matters known as summary offences. They observed the roles of key courtroom personnel such as magistrates, prosecutors, defence lawyers, and court officers, gaining valuable insight into how legal principles are applied in practice.

This experience enabled students to connect their classroom learning with real-world examples, strengthening their understanding of the structure and operation of Victoria’s court system.

Due to privacy and courtroom restrictions, photographs were not permitted.

Great Debates, Greater Growth

The college debating season wrapped up with commendable performances across three teams in the Essendon competition.

In Round 5, the B Grade team including Merola Youssef, Maria Abdelmalak, and Eman Morgan debated against Overnewton on the topic of banning profit from AI-generated art. Despite presenting strong arguments with confidence and clarity, they narrowly missed victory with a close score of 225 to 223.

The C Grade team including Amira Boulos, Meabe Solomon, and Cassandra Sawa took on the challenge of arguing that the Australian government should prioritise tourism. They delivered a solid case but were edged out by Lowther Hall by just two points, 224 to 226. The team had a strong season overall and are eager to return next year.

.

Meanwhile, the D Grade team including Tiana Kadas, Clara Tadrus, and Noah Moucha faced Strathmore Secondary College on the topic of making census completion optional. They put forward thoughtful arguments and demonstrated noticeable growth, finishing with a narrow 228 to 226 result.

A heartfelt thank you goes to all participating students for their dedication and courage, as well as to Ashraf Hanna, Mariam Saad, and Mariam Mikhail for their valuable support. Special appreciation is extended to Dalal Youil for organising meals and celebrating the team’s achievements.

With lessons learned and confidence gained, the future looks promising for SMCO’s debating teams.

Year 10 Work Experience: Future in the Making

This year’s work experience program gave our Year 10 students the chance to step into real-world industries that align with their passions and career dreams. The students:

  • Investigated cases alongside a forensic engineer
  • Shadowed scientists in Australia’s leading neuroscience facility
  • Observed live procedures in medical and dental clinics
  • Experienced life inside law firms and the Parliament of Victoria
  • Explored building and architecture projects on-site
  • Got up close with aeroplanes and aviation professionals
  • Learned from experts in skin clinics and allied health
  • Gained hands-on insights in business, education, and more

Our students dressed the part, asked thoughtful questions, and made lasting impressions, all while discovering the career paths that excite them most.

We couldn’t be prouder of their courage, curiosity, and professionalism. The future looks bright and it starts here.

Leading the Way: Building Tomorrow’s Leaders

We are so pleased with the commitment, perseverance and love of learning shown by our students during the recent Student Leadership Workshop.

The workshop gave students the opportunity to reflect on what leadership truly means. Through interactive activities, group challenges and guided discussions, they explored the qualities of effective leaders — communication, empathy, resilience and teamwork. Students also learnt how to draw on their individual strengths, encourage others and step up with confidence when challenges arise.

It was wonderful to see them collaborating, problem-solving and stepping outside their comfort zones. The skills developed through this workshop will not only prepare them for leadership roles within the College but also support their growth as compassionate and capable members of the wider community.

2026 VCE Info Night: Pathways to the Future

On 31 July, St Mary’s Coptic Orthodox College hosted its VCE Information Night, giving Year 10 and Year 11 students and their parents and carers the chance to explore subject choices and career pathways. The evening was designed to be both informative and inspiring, offering valuable insights into the VCE journey. Parents and carers engaged with teachers and career advisers, asked thoughtful questions and gained a clearer understanding of how to best support their children in making informed decisions about their future.

To complement the discussions, refreshments were provided, helping create a warm and welcoming atmosphere that encouraged open conversations and networking among families. We sincerely thank everyone who attended and contributed to the evening’s success. Together, we look forward to guiding and shaping our students’ bright futures.

Bullseye Bonding

To boost enthusiasm and motivation in the final stretch of the school year, our Year 12 students recently enjoyed an action-packed excursion to Archery Attack, a fast-paced hybrid of paintball, archery and dodgeball, also known as Arrow Tag.

Energy levels were at an all-time high as students squared off in friendly battles, firing foam-tipped arrows at their classmates and even at teachers, who were more than happy to return fire.

While there were a few playful grumbles about the arrows, nobody backed down.

The day was filled with laughter, team spirit and unforgettable moments. It was the perfect way to release some end-of-year stress, strengthen friendships and create memories that will last well beyond graduation.

Striking the Right Note: Music Performance

Anna Shahla, a Year 7 student who joined our College this year, has already made her mark with a remarkable passion for music and a strong determination to grow as a musician.

Largely self-taught on the piano over the past couple of years, Anna has displayed extraordinary talent and dedication, excelling in every classroom task and consistently exceeding expectations.

Her enthusiasm, perseverance and natural musical ability have been truly inspiring. To build on her impressive skills, Anna has now commenced formal piano lessons, further refining her technique and musical expression.

This term, Anna captivated the audience at assembly with two challenging performances: a shortened version of A Thousand Miles and a stunning rendition of Golden Hour. Her playing was both magical and moving, leaving the audience in awe.

2025 Victorian School Music Festival: Voices that Shine

On Tuesday 5 August and Wednesday 6 August, the SMCO Upper Primary Choir and Middle School Choir proudly represented our College at the 2025 Victorian School Music Festival (VSMF) in Box Hill.

This year’s festival brought together 96 school choirs from across Victoria, each assessed on how effectively they presented their repertoire. Performances were judged on a range of musical criteria, including pitch accuracy, vocal tone, ensemble balance, phrasing, rhythm, expression, stage presence and overall communication of the music’s message.

Guided by our dedicated music team, both choirs approached their preparation with enthusiasm and commitment. Their hard work shone through on stage, where they performed to an appreciative audience of peers and educators and were evaluated by two university-level professors specialising in vocal performance.

The Upper Primary Choir, consisting of 43 students, performed Sing for You and When You Believe, earning a bronze award for their heartfelt performance. The Middle School Choir, made up of 30 students from Years 7 to 9, presented The Greatest Love of All and The Tango of Thirteen, and proudly received a silver award.

Following their performances, students participated in a 15-minute singing workshop with the main adjudicator. This interactive session encouraged them to experiment with phrasing in creative ways and provided valuable feedback to support their growth as ensemble singers. Students left the workshop inspired, motivated and excited to continue developing their skills.

All of our students represented the College with maturity, commitment and passion for music. Their achievements are a testament to their dedication, and the entire College community is proud of their success.

Secondary's Science Week: Sparks of Curiosity

Science Week at the college was a vibrant celebration of curiosity, discovery and innovation, shining a spotlight on the talents and creativity of our secondary students. The week was packed with activities designed to inspire, challenge and deepen students’ appreciation for the sciences.

A highlight of the week was the showcase of student science projects. From environmental science to physics, students poured their knowledge and imagination into presentations that were both impressive and thought-provoking.

The showcase encouraged collaboration and peer learning, with students sharing ideas and sparking meaningful discussions.

Laboratory activities also played a central role in the celebrations. Students enthusiastically rolled up their sleeves to take part in hands-on experiments that brought classroom theories to life. These practical sessions were not only educational but also energising, igniting excitement about the scientific process and its possibilities.

Science Week at SMCO was a true celebration of learning, teamwork and curiosity, proof that the future of science is in capable hands.

On Thursday 7 August, our Year 3 students took part in their much-anticipated Year 3 Sleepover. Arriving with overnight bags, pillows and sleeping bags in hand, the excitement was written all over their faces as they prepared for an evening filled with fun and friendship.

The highlight of the night was the silent Hip Hop Disco, where students and teachers dressed up in colourful costumes and showed off their best dance moves. The energy on the dance floor was infectious, and the laughter could be heard all around.

Afterwards, students enjoyed dinner together before winding down with a movie, snuggled up in their sleeping bags.

The Year 3 Sleepover was not only a memorable night of fun but also a valuable experience that helped students build independence, strengthen friendships and develop important social skills.

Game On at SMCO: Intersports Competition!

The term thus far has been a vibrant celebration of sport, showcasing outstanding student involvement and school spirit. Preparation began in Term 2, with excitement building quickly as basketball and table tennis took centre stage.

More than 160 students nominated to take part, with 72 proudly representing SMCO in basketball and 32 in table tennis across Year 7, 8 and 9/10 boys’ and girls’ teams. While not everyone could be selected, the enthusiasm across the College was infectious, reflecting the strong sporting culture at SMCO.

With training sessions held two to three times each week, students showed impressive commitment, teamwork and effort. Beyond the competition, this term was about challenging themselves, building friendships and sharing in the joy of sport — the perfect way to close out the 2025 winter season. Congratulations to all who participated and supported along the way.

Term 3 was an outstanding season of sport at SMCO, with our Basketball and Table Tennis teams proudly representing the College across multiple venues.

SMCO had the honour of hosting the Table Tennis competition at St Mary’s Gymnasium, where our Year 10 students ran the day with professionalism and leadership that drew praise from all schools. On the tables, our teams impressed with their skill and spirit, with 4 of the 6 sides finishing as runners-up.

Basketball also brought plenty of highlights, with games held at Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium and Craigieburn Sports Stadium. Three teams placed 3rd overall, while all showed growth, determination and teamwork throughout the season.

This term’s success was about more than just results — it reflected the sportsmanship, pride and spirit that define SMCO. Congratulations to every student and staff member who made Term 3 sport such a memorable experience.

Primary CORE Week: Celebrating St Mary with Heart & Creativity

During CORE Week (18–22 August), the Primary CORE department hosted a series of enriching incursions led by visiting priests, who brought the life of St Mary to life through engaging and meaningful re-enactments.

To further celebrate the feast, students were given special St Mary activity booklets filled with fun challenges, including a reciting task and an art competition. These activities inspired creativity while also providing a valuable opportunity for students to reflect on the virtues and example of St Mary.

It was a memorable week of faith, learning and celebration for our Primary students.

Secondary CORE Week

During our blessed CORE Week, Secondary students were immersed in a range of activities that drew them closer to Christ and His Church.

Chapel time was brought to life as our CORE teachers dressed as biblical characters, helping students reflect more deeply on the living Word of God. With eager hearts, students engaged with the lessons, embracing the beauty of God’s message.

The heartfelt recitations of Psalm 23 uplifted everyone, filling the College with peace and echoing the wisdom of Pope Shenouda’s words: “Keep the Psalms, and the Psalms will keep you.”

Another highlight was the Iconography Competition, where students expressed their faith through sacred art, celebrating the treasures of our Coptic Orthodox heritage.

Throughout the week, the church doors were open at lunchtimes, inviting students to gather in unity and lift their voices to God through Glorifications that filled the space with heavenly joy.

Truly, the week was overflowing with blessings. Every activity nurtured faith, strengthened unity and filled our College with a spirit of joy, love and devotion.

Kindness in Action: Bullying No Way! Week

In Week 4, we took part in Bullying No Way: National Week of Action, Australia’s key bullying prevention initiative. As a Christian college, we stand firm in our values of respect, inclusivity, and kindness, upholding a strong zero-tolerance approach to bullying.

Our students embraced the week through meaningful activities:

  • Secondary students engaged in psychoeducation sessions, fostering empathy, respectful relationships, and awareness of the impact of bullying.
  • Primary students celebrated diversity and belonging through creative projects. Foundation to Year 3 created a colourful “school of fish” collage, symbolising unity in difference. Years 4 to 6 designed mosaic tiles, which combined into vibrant artworks showing that every contribution matters.

The week reminded us all that kindness is powerful, inclusion is essential, and together we build a stronger, more welcoming community.
