Message from the Head of College
Dear College Community,
I would like to reflect on a profoundly important aspect of our children's journey within our community and educational programs: the indispensable role of our teachers.
While you are the primary educators of your children in faith and life, our dedicated teachers here at St Mary's Coptic Orthodox College are vital partners in this sacred responsibility. They are shaping everlasting memories and laying the foundations for faithful, virtuous lives.
Every student carries the memory of their teachers throughout their entire lifetime. These memories are not just about lessons learned from books, but about the kindness shown, the patience extended, and the Christian character exemplified. A teacher’s influence is a lasting legacy, a spiritual inheritance that guides a child long after they have left the classroom.
Let us nurture an environment where our teachers feel valued, respected, and empowered to continue their crucial work. By honouring them, we are investing in the everlasting memories and the eternal salvation of our children. I wish every teacher at SMCO a very happy Teacher's Day!
May the Lord bless you and your families, and may the intercessions of St Mary be with us all.
Fr. Tadros Sharobeam
Head of College

Message from the Principal
Dear SMCO Family,
It’s hard to believe we’re already past the halfway point of Term 4. There’s a wonderful energy around the College as students and staff embrace the final weeks of the school year with enthusiasm, teamwork and joy. It’s been so uplifting to see our young people giving their best and making the most of every experience.
Our Year 4 and Year 10 camps were filled with laughter, courage and friendship; experiences that build memories and character. For our Year 12 students, this term has been especially meaningful. From visiting Victorian Parliament to enjoying a day at Funfields and celebrating their final day of college together, it’s been a beautiful reminder of how far they’ve come and how much they’ve grown.
We’re also incredibly delighted with several student achievements. Congratulations to Katelyn Youil and Jean-Paul Boulos for their recent awards; and to Emy Attia, who was recognised by the Victorian Arabic Language Teachers Association for her exceptional
performance in VCE Arabic (Units 3 & 4, 2024). These accomplishments reflect dedication, perseverance and strong support from their teachers and families.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all our Year 12 students as they complete their final exams. We wish them calm, confidence, and clarity; trusting that their hard work will be rewarded and that God will guide their next steps.
Across the College, learning has continued in creative and engaging ways. Year 7 students enjoyed exploring mathematical concepts through the World of Mathematics incursion, while our Art and Technology Night was a wonderful celebration of imagination, innovation and collaboration across year levels.
We also paused to celebrate World Teachers’ Day, acknowledging the extraordinary work of our teachers, LSOs, admin team, maintenance crew and all staff who give so much of themselves each day. Our College continues to grow because of their dedication and heart.
As we approach the end of the year, I encourage families to take note of the new national age restrictions on social media use. These changes are an important step toward protecting the wellbeing and safety of young people online and your partnership in this is vital.
Thank you, as always, for your support and trust. Let’s finish the year together with gratitude and kindness in all that our students, and our community, have achieved.
Blessings,
Germaine Saad
Principal

Thunderstorm asthma – be prepared this pollen season
Thunderstorm asthma – be prepared this pollen season
Grass pollen season, which typically runs from October to December each year in Victoria, brings an increase in asthma and hay fever symptoms. It also increases the risk of thunderstorm asthma. For people with asthma or hay fever, especially those who experience
wheezing or coughing with their hay fever, thunderstorm asthma can be sudden, serious and even life threatening.
St Mary’s Coptic Orthodox College will implement a range of measures to keep our school community safe as the risk of thunderstorm asthma increases. Our staff are trained in asthma first aid, and we will monitor the Vic Emergency app to receive thunderstorm warnings, and, where appropriate, keep students indoors when weather
forecasts identify greater risk. During the season, there are some things you can do to prepare and protect yourself and
your family:

Memories Made at the Year 4 Camp
At the beginning of Term 4, our Year 4 students embarked on an exciting adventure to the Portsea Campsite! The camp was filled with thrilling activities, including the Giant Swing, High Ropes Course, and the Flying Fox. A spontaneous campfire added to the fun, and students even celebrated a birthday together!
Throughout the camp, students developed confidence, resilience, and teamwork skills while creating lasting memories and strengthening friendships. It was truly a camp to remember!

Year 12 Excursion to Victorian Parliament
In preparation for their upcoming exams, our Year 12 Legal Studies students visited the Victorian Parliament House for an engaging and hands-on learning experience.
During the excursion, students stepped into the shoes of Members of Parliament, taking part in a lively mock debate where they proposed, discussed, and voted on a bill. This activity brought the law-making process to life and helped students deepen their understanding of how decisions are made in Victoria’s parliamentary system.

Students also enjoyed a guided tour of Parliament House, exploring both the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council chambers. They gained valuable insights into the history, architecture, and daily workings of the Victorian Parliament.
It was a fantastic opportunity for students to connect their classroom learning to the real-world operation of our state’s democratic institutions.

Adventure, Friendship, and Fun – Year 10 Camp Highlights!
The Year 10 cohort recently returned from a three-day camp in Marysville, where students were challenged to step outside their comfort zones and strengthen connections with their peers.
Throughout the duration of the camp, students took part in a range of outdoor and team-based activities designed to build confidence, cooperation, and resilience.
Highlights included a six-hour hike through the surrounding bushland, canoeing on the lake, and gathering around the campfire in the evening to share stories and reflect on the day’s experiences. Students approached each activity with enthusiasm and good humour, demonstrating maturity and teamwork.
A sincere thank-you to all staff who attended and supported the students - their time, energy, and care helped make the camp a meaningful and memorable experience for everyone involved.

Year 12 Fun Field Excursion
To mark the end of formal classes and acknowledge the incredible journey our Year 12 students have undertaken, we celebrated with a fun-filled excursion to Funfields Theme Park. The day was a well-earned opportunity for students to relax, reconnect with each other outside the classroom, and celebrate the friendships and memories formed throughout their years at school.
Under blue skies and warm sunshine, students enjoyed everything Funfields had to offer, from the adrenaline rush of thrill rides to the refreshing excitement of water slides and wave pools. Whether it was racing down the Kraken Racer or simply enjoying a laugh with mates over lunch, the day was filled with smiles, joy, and a strong sense of school spirit.
This Celebration Day wasn’t just about rides and fun, it was a chance to pause and reflect on how far our students have come, and to share a special moment together before the focus shifts to VCAA exams. It was wonderful to see our Year 12s come together one last time in such a positive and supportive way.
A heartfelt thank you to the staff who supervised and helped organise the day, and to the students for their enthusiasm, good behaviour, and positive energy throughout the excursion.
We are incredibly proud of our Year 12s and wish them all the very best as they head into their final exams. You’ve got this, Class of 2025!
